Electric tanks make sense in homes without gas, or where electric rates beat gas rates. They have no flame, no venting, and no pilot to keep lit, which makes them simpler than gas. What they have instead is two heating elements, two thermostats, and a safety reset, and that is where nearly every electric repair starts.
The electric repairs we make most
Hot water runs out fast. The upper element heats the top of the tank first, then hands off to the lower element. When the lower element or its thermostat fails, you get a short burst of hot water and then lukewarm. Hard water makes this one common around here, because sediment settles on the bottom of the tank and buries the lower element.
No hot water at all. Check the breaker first. If it has not tripped, the usual causes are a failed upper element or thermostat, or a tripped high-limit reset. That reset is a safety switch. If it keeps tripping, something failed, so stop resetting it and call.
Breaker keeps tripping. Usually a shorted element or a wiring problem at the heater. Water and 240 volts do not mix, so this is one to leave to a licensed plumber.
Rumbling, popping, or rusty water. Sediment and a worn anode rod. A flush and an anode check often buy years. Here is what each water heater noise means.
Most electric repairs, from a single element to a full rebuild of the electric parts, run about $250 to $600, and most wrap up in one visit because the trucks carry common parts. You get the price in writing before any work starts. If the tank body itself is leaking, it is time for a new one. Our water heater repair page covers the repair-or-replace math in full.
Replacing an electric tank
The 50-gallon electric tank is the workhorse, and a standard 40 or 50 gallon swap typically runs $2,100 to $2,800 installed. Our shop stocks the common sizes, so it is usually a same-day job if you schedule by noon. The base price covers the new heater, the water connections and wiring hookup, and haul-away of the old tank. The full breakdown, including code items and what moves the price, is on our water heater replacement page.
We install the major brands, including Rheem, Bradford White, and A.O. Smith. Steel tanks come in 6, 8, and 12 year warranty tiers. The Rheem Marathon is the step up: its tank will not rust, and it carries a lifetime tank warranty, which costs more up front and pays off if you plan to stay in the house.
Bigger than 50 gallons
On electric, 50 gallons is still the standard size. Bigger standard electric tanks are being phased out under Department of Energy efficiency rules, and heat pump water heaters are replacing them. If your household needs more hot water than a 50 can give, the other options are a booster valve or twin tanks in series. We size to how you actually use hot water. Not sure what you need? Here is how to size a water heater.
Gas to electric, and electric tankless
Switching from gas to electric is doable in most homes, but we check your panel first, because an electric tank needs its own 240-volt circuit. Going the other way, electric to gas, means running a gas line and venting, which our gas line work covers on the same job.
One honest caveat: whole-house electric tankless rarely works. Most homes do not have the incoming electrical capacity, so electric tankless is usually a point-of-use fix for one bathroom or a laundry. For whole-house tankless, we put in gas units, and we prefer Navien. More on our tankless water heaters page.
Hard water and maintenance
Akron-area water is hard, and on an electric tank that means scale on the elements and sediment on the bottom. An annual flush is the cheapest way to stretch the tank’s life, and it is built into Mackin Protect. A softener from our water treatment side protects the next tank from day one.

Read our reviewsElectric Water Heaters: common questions
How much does an electric water heater replacement cost in Akron?
A standard 40 or 50 gallon electric tank typically runs $2,100 to $2,800 installed. Longer-warranty tanks like the Rheem Marathon cost more up front. You get your options in writing before any work starts, and the dispatch fee is waived if you go with the work.
Why does my electric water heater run out of hot water so fast?
Usually a failed lower heating element or thermostat. The upper element still heats the top of the tank, so you get a short burst of hot water and then lukewarm. Hard water sediment burying the lower element is a common cause around here.
Why is there no hot water at all from my electric water heater?
Check the breaker first. If it has not tripped, the usual causes are a failed upper element or thermostat, or a tripped high-limit reset. A reset that trips more than once is telling you something failed, so call instead of resetting it again.
Can I still buy an electric water heater bigger than 50 gallons?
Standard 50-gallon electric tanks are still sold. Bigger standard electric tanks are being phased out under Department of Energy efficiency rules, and heat pump water heaters are replacing them. Twin tanks are another option for big households.
Can I switch my water heater from gas to electric?
In most homes, yes, but we check your electrical panel first. An electric tank needs its own 240-volt circuit, and a full or undersized panel changes the math. We will tell you before you commit.
