A sump pump is the one appliance in your house that only matters a few days a year. When those days come, usually a March thaw or a July downpour, it either works or you have a wet basement. We install, repair and back up sump systems for homeowners across Wadsworth, Norton, Copley, Barberton, Medina and the rest of Greater Akron. Mackin & Sons is family-owned, founded in 2009, with 17,000+ jobs and a 4.9 star average across 600+ Google reviews.
Why basements around Akron take on water
Northeast Ohio sits on heavy clay soil, and clay does not drain. When snowmelt or a spring storm saturates the ground, water presses against your foundation and works its way to the footer drains. Those drains feed your sump crock, and the pump is the only thing standing between that water and your basement floor. Add our freeze-thaw cycles, which shift foundations and crack discharge lines, plus a lot of housing built in the 1950s through the 70s with original footer drains and undersized crocks, and you get a region where a working sump pump is not optional.
Signs your pump is in trouble
Call before the storm if you notice any of these:
- Water rising in the crock during heavy rain while the pump sits silent
- The pump runs constantly or kicks on and off every few minutes
- Grinding, rattling or humming instead of a clean pumping sound
- A musty smell or damp floor near the pit
- The pump is past 7 years old and has never been serviced
During a storm, if you see water coming up in the sump crock faster than the pump can move it, that is an emergency. Call us at 330-825-3686. We answer nights, weekends and holidays through our emergency plumbing line.
What happens on the visit
We test the pump and the float switch, check the check valve (a leaking one makes the pump move the same water twice), inspect the discharge line outside, and look at the crock itself. Then you get a price in writing before any work starts. Our trucks carry common pumps, switches and check valves, so most repairs and straight swaps happen in one visit. The dispatch fee is $79 in our core area, $89 in Greater Akron, and it rolls into the job if you approve the work. Details are on our pricing page.
Primary pumps: submersible or pedestal
The primary pump does the everyday work. Submersible pumps sit down in the pit, run quieter, and tend to be more reliable, so that is what we usually recommend. Pedestal pumps sit above the pit and are easier to reach for service. Either way, we size the pump to your crock and to the amount of water your footer drains actually move, not whatever happens to be on the shelf.
Backup pumps: battery or water powered
Your primary pump runs on electricity. The storms that flood basements are the same storms that knock out power, and a backup pump covers that gap.
| Backup type | How it runs | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Battery backup | Deep-cycle battery when the power drops | Check the battery every 6 months, replace every 3 to 5 years |
| Water-powered | Your home’s municipal water pressure | Needs city water, so not an option on a well |
| Generator-connected | Keeps the primary pump itself running | Covers your existing pump through an outage |
On a well, your backup needs a battery, since water-powered units rely on city pressure. See our well pump services.
Basic protection starts with a dual controller for a few hundred dollars. The price moves up from there with a full backup pump, Wi-Fi monitoring or extra batteries for longer run time. We walk you through the options and you pick what fits.
Pump alarms
An alarm will not pump a single gallon, but it buys you the hours that matter. Without one, the first sign of a dead pump is usually a wet floor. We install simple audible high-water alarms, puck-style alarms, and Wi-Fi units that ping your phone when the water rises or the power drops. Many of the backup systems we install come with an alarm built in. Test the alarm once a year, ideally during your annual pump check.
Repair or replace, honestly
A stuck float switch or a leaking check valve on a younger pump is a cheap fix, and we will tell you so. But most sump pumps last 7 to 10 years. If yours is in that range and acting up, putting money into it usually buys one more season, not five. We will give you both prices and let you decide.
Why this is plumber work
A sump pump looks like a plug-in appliance. The failures we get called to are usually installs that skipped the details: a pump sized wrong for the crock, no air relief hole drilled so the pump air-locks, discharge piping that dumps water right back against the foundation, or a check valve in backwards. A new crock means excavation, electrical and getting the discharge point right. We work under our Ohio plumbing license, insured and background-checked, and installations carry a minimum 1-year warranty. While we are down there, we can also look at yard drainage if water pools against the house.

Sump Pumps: common questions
How long does a sump pump last?
Most sump pumps last 7 to 10 years. If yours is in that range, plan the replacement before the next big storm instead of after it. An annual test tells you where you stand.
How much does a backup sump pump cost?
Basic protection with a dual controller runs a few hundred dollars. The price climbs from there with a full backup pump, Wi-Fi monitoring or multiple batteries for longer run time. You get the exact number in writing before we start.
Can I replace a sump pump myself?
We do not recommend it. A proper swap means sizing the pump to the crock, drilling an air relief hole so the pump does not air-lock, and running the discharge correctly. A brand new pit adds excavation and electrical work on top of that.
What are the signs my sump pump is failing?
Water rising in the crock during rain, a pump that runs constantly or kicks on and off every few minutes, grinding or rattling noises, or a musty smell near the pit. If water is coming up faster than the pump can move it, call 330-825-3686 right away.
How often should I test my sump pump and backup?
Test quarterly and before spring rains. Lift the float switch or pour water into the pit until the pump kicks on. For battery backups, check the battery every six months and replace it every 3 to 5 years.
