- Mackin Pure City: carbon plus anti-scale
- Mackin Pure Soft: softener plus carbon
- Chlorine taste and odor removal
- Scale protection for city water
- Filter cartridge service
City water is treated, tested, and safe. But it’s also chlorinated and runs through your old pipes. By the time it reaches your shower, your coffee maker, or your kid’s water bottle, you can taste the treatment plant in it. Whole-house water filtration installs once at the main line and fixes every tap in the house, starting at $744 installed, as of July 2026.
Why city water should be filtered
Municipal supplies around Greater Akron vary town to town. Wadsworth and Medina have their own supply and treatment system. Akron provides water for Fairlawn and Copley. But they all use the same ingredients: some form of chlorine to kill bacteria and fluoride additives. And standard treatment is not designed to remove microplastics or PFAS, the “forever chemicals.” Sometimes you can smell the chlorine when the water is turned on, especially in hot shower steam. The chlorine did its job at the treatment plant. But how much is left over in your water when it reaches your faucet is unknown. And you now have to drink it and cook with it after it arrives.
Three reliable options, with real prices
From our current price book (July 2026):
- Whole-house in-line filter: $744 installed. A 10-inch cartridge filter on the main line with a bypass valve and the wrench to service it. Handles taste and odor for the whole house. The budget answer, and an honest one. We also offer filter replacement service later for $80.
- Mackin Pure City: $2,406 installed. Our city-water system: an anti-scale in-line filter paired with an up-flow carbon tank. Chlorine, chemical taste, odors, and scale protection in one setup, with no salt to haul and nothing to plug in.
- Mackin Pure Soft: $3,609 installed. For city water that is also genuinely hard. A 24,000-grain Clack water softener and carbon filtration in one system, so the filter handles taste while the softener protects the water heater and fixtures.
Every option gets the exact price in writing before work starts, and the dispatch fee rolls into the job if you approve it.
Which one fits your house
If the complaint is minor taste and smell issues, the in-line filter can handle that. Tougher issues can be solved by the Mackin Pure City, which uses the carbon media to do the removal work and the scale protection unit to prevent harmful scale build-up. If your glasses come out of the dishwasher spotted and the showerhead crusts up, you could also be dealing with hardness. For those cases, we use the Mackin Pure Soft, which adds a water softener to the system. We run a free in-home water test before recommending anything, so the answer comes from your home’s exact water condition, not a pre-packaged, off-the-shelf system.
What these filters do not do
A city-water filter is not well-water equipment. Iron staining, sulfur smell, and sediment from a private well need dedicated treatment sized to the problem. Carbon filtration also does not remove hardness minerals, so heavy scale is a softener conversation, and if you only want drinking-water perfection at one faucet, that points to reverse osmosis. If you are weighing filter against softener, this comparison walks through it.

Read our reviewsWhole-House Water Filters: common questions
Do I need a water filter on city water?
Need, no. The water is safe. But if you can taste chlorine at the tap or smell it in the shower, a filter at the main line fixes every faucet in the house at once, and the free in-home test tells us exactly what your supply is carrying.
How much does a whole-house water filter cost installed?
The in-line cartridge filter is $744 installed. Our Mackin Pure City system, carbon plus anti-scale, is $2,406. Pure Soft, which adds a full water softener for hard city water, is $3,609. Prices as of July 2026, in writing before any work starts.
Whole-house filter or water softener?
Different jobs. The filter handles taste, odor, chlorine, and chemical carryover. A softener removes the hardness minerals that scale up water heaters and fixtures. The water test says which one your house actually needs. Some homes need both, and that is what Pure Soft is.
What maintenance do these need?
The in-line filter takes a cartridge swap when taste starts creeping back, an $80 service visit. The carbon tank systems run for years without weekly attention and have no salt to haul. When media eventually needs attention, we service what we install.
Will a filter stop scale on my fixtures?
Pure City includes anti-scale protection that helps, but genuinely hard water calls for a softener. That is the line between the two products, and it is why we test first instead of guessing.
