Hard water is the local condition

Northeast Ohio water is generally considered hard compared to other parts of the country. Homes on well systems can have extremely hard water, but even municipal supplies from Akron, Wadsworth, and Medina carry enough calcium and magnesium to leave a residue. The signs are familiar: white spots on dishes, soap that will not lather, crusty buildup on the showerhead, dry skin and hair, and orange rings in the toilet when there’s heavy iron in the water.

Do you need a water softener? Plumbers say “yes”

Soft water produces great soap lather and keeps things spot-free, and that’s great. But our plumbers see all the hidden damage hard water can do. A tank water heater in this area should last 8 to 12 years, and hard water is the main thing that cuts that short. Scale settles in the tank, the control valve can’t read the water temperature accurately, and extra cycling means more stress on the tank. On a tankless unit, scale coats the heat exchanger and can cut its lifespan in half. And sink faucets do not do well with hard water. The cartridges get stiff and dripping faucets develop. The same goes for toilets. Water deposits that clog up the fill valve may cause it to not shut off all the way, costing you countless gallons of lost water.

A properly sized softener removes those minerals before they reach any of it. Our first goal is to make sure you have clean, safe water to use in your home. Our second goal is to protect the investment you’ve made in the plumbing system. So, yes, soft water helps your skin, hair, dishes, and clothes look and feel better, but we care just as much about your water heater, dishwasher, shower head, and toilet.

What a softener costs installed

Every install includes hauling away the old unit, moving water lines up to 10 feet, up to 30 feet of drain line, a custom regeneration schedule set to your actual water, and a leak and operation test before we leave. The dispatch fee ($79 core area, $89 Greater Akron) rolls into the job if you approve the work.

Sized to your water, not a sales quota

The grain number is capacity, and the right one depends on your hardness level and how much water your household typically uses. That is what the free in-home water test is for: it gives us the hardness number, the iron content, and pH to start with. Every system is custom built for your home. We’ve installed single-tank softeners in Doylestown that easily removed the hardness, while three miles away in Wadsworth the home required a larger capacity softener with an iron filter to really clean up the water.

One more thing we do on purpose: every softener we install is built with a Clack control head. Parts stay available, and years from now the head can be rebuilt in place ($252 for a piston and seals rebuild) instead of scrapping the whole unit. Equipment you can service beats equipment you replace. The replacement jobs we run are usually due to the tank media that removes the hardness being too old and fouled up. Essentially, the media is just too clogged up to do its job.

An honest note on salt-free units

Salt-free “softeners” condition water so minerals stick less, but they do not remove hardness. There is a real difference, and you should know it before you buy either one. If hauling salt bags is the concern, say so and we will discuss the pros and cons of those systems. We get it, hauling salt is no fun. But remember, we are here to serve our customers, so we do offer salt service too.

When a softener alone is the wrong buy

Sometimes it is. Heavy iron needs a dedicated iron system, not a softener working overtime. A rotten egg smell only on the hot side is usually the water heater’s anode rod, not your supply, and no softener fixes that. Some city-water homes are better served by filtration alone, and if the goal is better drinking water at the tap, that is a reverse osmosis job.
