What a new water heater costs in Akron

JobTypical installed price
Standard tank, atmospheric vent (40 or 50 gallon, gas or electric)$2,100 to $2,800
Power-vented tank$2,800 and up
Warranty swap-out (tank still under manufacturer warranty)From around $800
Tankless replacement or tank to tankless conversion$2,500 to $5,600

Those ranges are based on recently completed jobs. Our basic pricing is the same for everyone, whether you’re in Medina, Doylestown, Barberton, or Fairlawn. But every home is different, so we pinpoint the cause of the failure, check for applicable warranties, and inspect the venting, the valves, and the expansion tank. Those are the things that really move the price up or down.

The dispatch fee is $79 in our core area and $89 across Greater Akron, and it’s waived if you go with the work. Financing is available if you’d rather spread a replacement out. You can search all our water heater pricing on our pricing page.

What affects the price

Venting. Gas and propane water heaters produce carbon monoxide that must be vented outside. Atmospheric-vented tanks use metal piping into a chimney or roof vent, while power-vented tanks use an electric blower motor to push exhaust through PVC or ABS piping out a side wall. That extra motor and its safety components make power-vented models more expensive.

Gallon size. Standard 40 to 50 gallon tanks are the most common and the most cost-effective. 30-gallon tanks are surprisingly more expensive, while 65 to 75 gallon models cost significantly more and always take extra labor to move safely out of the house. On electric, 50 gallons is still the standard size. Bigger standard electric tanks are being phased out under Department of Energy efficiency rules, and heat pump water heaters are replacing them. For households of 5 or more that need extra capacity, our techs can recommend options like a booster valve (adding 10 to 15 gallons) or twin 40-gallon tanks in series.

Plumbing code or warranty requirements. Older installations may be missing current code requirements, like a thermal expansion tank (about $200) or a gas line sediment trap (about $35). We inspect your setup, explain any code updates or warranty requirements, and give you upfront pricing options before work begins.

Warranty length. You can save hundreds, sometimes over $1,000, if your current heater is still under warranty. Standard tank warranties typically run 6 years. On replacements we offer coverage from the standard 6-year manufacturer warranty up to 12 years, while tankless models usually carry 15-year warranties.

What is included

Our base price covers the new heater, the gas, water, and venting connections, and haul-away and disposal of the old tank. Back at the office, the team registers your warranty with the manufacturer and sets you up for service reminders. Every install carries at least a one-year warranty on our work, five years for Mackin Protect members, on top of the manufacturer’s tank warranty. Options beyond the base price vary, but may include permits, updated water and gas shutoff valves, and extended warranties, just to name a few.

Same day, if you schedule by noon

Leaking tanks don’t wait for convenient times. Our shop stocks the common 40 and 50 gallon tanks in gas and electric, plus a tankless unit, so a replacement is usually same-day and a few hours start to finish. You get a text when your plumber is on the way. We’ve gotten pretty good at tank to tankless conversions, so even those can usually be done the same day. The full conversion picture is on our tankless water heaters page.

If the tank is leaking onto the floor right now, do two things before you call anyone. Shut off the cold supply valve on top of the heater, then turn the gas control to off, or flip the breaker if it’s electric. That stops the tank from refilling. Then call 330-825-3686. We offer emergency service, and Mackin Protect members go to the front of the line.

Real quick: don’t get pressured

Not every no-hot-water call turns into a tank replacement. We’d rather sell you a $300 part (and earn a lifetime customer) than a $3,000 heater you didn’t need. Here’s how we approach it:

  • Water on the floor. Most likely a replacement, but it could just be a bad T&P (relief) valve dripping.
  • No hot water, no leaks, on a 10+ year old heater. A parts repair could run $500 or more, but you could get another 3 to 5 years out of it.
  • Rumbling and popping. It does NOT mean your tank is about to explode. It’s sediment, and it should be addressed sooner rather than later. Here’s what each water heater noise means.

For a real example of the repair-or-replace math, here’s the $300 sensor that saved a Wadsworth homeowner nearly $3,000. Our water heater repair page covers the repair side in full.

Mackin & Sons provided excellent service when my water heater failed. They got me on the schedule the first day I was available and gave me a written estimate with options to repair or replace. I chose replacement, and they helped me secure financing. Josh and Ethan did a fantastic job fitting a 40-gallon water heater and drain pan into a small opening that previously held only a 30-gallon.

Water Heater Replacement: common questions

How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Akron?

A standard 40 or 50 gallon atmospheric-vent tank runs $2,100 to $2,800 installed. Power-vented tanks start around $2,800, warranty swap-outs from around $800, and tankless replacements and conversions run $2,500 to $5,600. You get your options in writing before any work starts, and the dispatch fee is waived if you go with the work.

How long does a water heater replacement take?

A standard tank swap is usually a few hours, one visit, because we stock the common sizes at our Wadsworth shop. Add time if the venting changes or the tank sits in a tight spot. Tank to tankless conversions take longer, but we can usually finish those the same day too.

Can you replace my water heater today?

Usually, yes, if you schedule by noon. We stock the common 40 and 50 gallon tanks in gas and electric, so a standard swap is a same-day job most of the time. If the tank is leaking right now, shut the cold supply valve on top and turn the gas or breaker off first.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Ohio?

Many of our cities require one for a water heater replacement. When yours does, we pull the permit and meet the inspector, and it shows up as a line on your written options before any work starts. A permit is also your proof the venting and gas were done right if you ever sell the house.

Why is a plumber's price higher than the big box store install quote?

The box store number is usually the tank plus a basic hookup by a subcontractor. Our base price includes the gas, water, and venting connections, haul-away, and warranty registration. If your setup needs code updates like an expansion tank, you see them priced on your written options before work starts, not as surprises on install day, and a licensed plumber answers the phone next year.

Does my manufacturer warranty cover a replacement?

If the tank fails inside its warranty, usually 6 years on a standard tank, the manufacturer covers the tank itself and you pay labor and parts. We check the warranty before we quote anything, call the manufacturer to confirm it, and handle the paperwork. That is a very different bill than a full replacement, and it is worth the five minutes to find out.
