A heat pump water heater, often called a hybrid, is an electric tank with a heat pump built on top. Instead of heating water directly with elements, it pulls heat out of the surrounding air and moves it into the tank, the way a refrigerator moves heat out of the food. That is why it runs on a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank. It still has backup elements for the mornings when everyone showers back to back.
Where a heat pump fits
Replacing a big electric tank. On electric, 50 gallons is still the standard size. Bigger standard electric tanks are being phased out under Department of Energy efficiency rules, and heat pump water heaters are replacing them. If your household needs more than 50 gallons and you do not have gas, this is usually the answer.
Homes without gas. If you are on electric anyway, a heat pump tank is the efficient way to stay there.
A damp basement. The unit blows out cool, dry air. In an Ohio basement that is a free dehumidifier.
If your home has gas, a gas tank or a tankless unit is often the simpler swap, and we will lay out those options side by side. Sometimes the plain electric tank wins, and we will tell you that too. Our electric water heaters page covers the standard tanks.
What it needs
This is where heat pump installs go right or wrong, so we check it before you buy, not on install day.
Room to breathe. The unit pulls heat from the air around it. An open basement or a large utility room works. A tight closet usually does not, unless the door is louvered or the air is ducted.
A space that stays mild. These run best in a space that does not get cold. A basement is ideal. An unheated garage in January makes the unit lean on its backup elements, which erases most of the savings.
A drain. Pulling heat out of the air pulls out moisture too, so the unit makes condensate. It needs a floor drain nearby or a small condensate pump.
The right circuit and clearance. Most models run on the same 240-volt circuit as a standard electric tank, and they are taller than a standard tank, so we measure the ceiling height too.
Tolerance for a little hum. The fan and compressor sound about like a dehumidifier. In a basement nobody notices. Next to a bedroom, someone might.
What it costs
A heat pump water heater costs more up front than a standard electric tank and less to run every month after. The number depends on the tank size, the room, the drain, and the electrical, so you get it in writing after we see your space, with the dispatch fee waived if you go with the work. Tax credits may apply. Financing is available. The tank brands we install, Rheem, A.O. Smith, and Bradford White, all make heat pump models, and every install carries at least a one-year warranty on our work, on top of the manufacturer’s warranty. The full picture on replacing a tank, including code items and what is included, is on our water heater replacement page.
Living with one
Most models have a few modes: heat pump only, hybrid, and electric. Hybrid is the everyday setting, because it uses the heat pump first and the elements only when demand spikes. Plan on 10 to 15 years from the tank. Akron-area water is hard, so an annual flush and an anode rod check still matter, and the air filter on top needs a rinse now and then. Flushing is built into Mackin Protect, and a softener from our water treatment side protects the tank from day one. If something acts up, our water heater repair team services heat pump units too.

Read our reviewsHeat Pump Water Heaters: common questions
How does a heat pump water heater work?
It works like a refrigerator in reverse. A fan pulls warm air from the room across a coil, a compressor moves that heat into the water, and the cooled, drier air blows back out. Backup electric elements kick in when you use a lot of hot water at once.
How much does a heat pump water heater cost?
More up front than a standard electric tank, and less to run. The number depends on the tank size, the room, the drain, and the electrical, so we price it in writing after we see the space. Tax credits may apply.
Will a heat pump water heater work in an Ohio basement?
Usually, yes. Basements stay mild year-round, which is where these units run best, and they cool and dehumidify the space as a bonus. In a cold, unheated space they lean on their backup elements and lose most of the savings.
Does a heat pump water heater need a drain?
Yes. Pulling heat out of the air also pulls out moisture, so the unit makes condensate that has to go to a floor drain or a small condensate pump. We plan the drain before the install, not after.
How long does a heat pump water heater last?
Plan on 10 to 15 years. Hard water still matters, so an annual flush and an anode rod check stretch the tank's life, and the air filter on top needs a cleaning now and then.
