Water Heaters
Home From Vacation to No Hot Water: A Wadsworth Customer's Story
Every so often a customer tells the story better than we could. Jessica’s family came home to Wadsworth from a 4th of July weekend away and found the water heater dead. Below is what happened next, in her words, exactly as she sent them. The photo came with the story: that is Thomas, one of our plumbers, with three of the family and their new Rheem water heater. All smiles, and yes, the hot water was back on by then.
In Jessica’s words
After a 4th of July weekend away, we came home to no hot water, not ideal with a bunch of women and a working man in the house. We contacted multiple local plumbers to get quotes and to see who would be willing to help us out pretty quickly. Mackin did the right thing by sending our pal Anthony over within a couple hours of our original call. (Unfortunately no picture of Anthony and we had never met him before, he is just the type of guy everyone would want to be friends with.)
Anthony was just calm in nature, which is a very strong trait when dealing with people in potentially high-stress environments… I mean no showers for days. High stress! Mackin gave options for replacements, which varied in factors like price or quality of the water heater. It was nice to be able to see they aren’t pushing the most expensive option and Anthony was educated enough (and just really good at his job) and walked me through every option possible. I weighed all the options and compared them to the other quotes and responses and it was a no-brainer.
There was a lapse in communication on their end on install day but once that was rectified (pretty quickly too) we have a new HOT WATER HEATER, within 24 hours of our initial contact with them. Anthony and Thomas definitely did a great job representing the company and secured our 1st call next time to Mackin & Sons!!
What we take from it
First, Anthony was calm. That helps reassure customers that their emergency is under control. Second, he did not push the most expensive option. That too builds reassurance that we are on the customer’s side, doing what we can to help in a difficult situation. Every replacement quote we do works like this: different price and quality tiers, in writing, before any work starts. You pick.
And since we published the whole review, one more thing: she is right about the communication lapse on our part. We would rather run her story complete than trimmed. Mistakes happen every day. The key is fixing them fast, and by her account, we did.
If you came home to a cold shower
What Jessica got is the same thing every call gets: a plumber out fast, a straight diagnosis, and every option priced in writing. Sometimes the honest answer is a repair, like the $300 sensor that saved another Wadsworth homeowner nearly $3,000. When the tank is done, most standard swaps happen in a single visit, and our shop stocks the common sizes, so water heater installation in Wadsworth is usually a same-day fix. Our water heater page covers both paths.
Before you call, two checks are fair game. On a gas heater, make sure the dial did not get bumped to vacation mode over the trip and that the pilot is lit. On electric, check the breaker. Either one can mimic a dead heater and cost nothing to fix. Water pooling around the base of the tank is the one symptom with no cheap answer, because a tank that leaks from the body is done.
