Plumber Saves Medina Homeowner Nearly $300 on Hose Faucet Repair
Rick called from Medina because he thought he needed a new hose faucet. When we arrived, the hose was completely frozen onto the hose faucet threads. He assumed that meant he needed a pricey new hose faucet, and he was looking at a $380 bill for us to replace it.
We carry the Woodford Model 17, which is an anti-siphon, freeze-proof (as long as you remove the hose in the winter) hose faucet. It’s durable, well designed, and made in the USA. You can learn more about Woodford Manufacturing on their site.
How Nick saved the faucet
After inspecting the hose faucet and the basement, where much of the work would be done, our service tech Nick determined the existing hose faucet was in good working condition and that he could remove the hose without replacing the faucet. So he did what we always do. He discussed the different options with the homeowner. In this case it came down to attempting to salvage it or replacing the faucet. The homeowner approved a salvage attempt for $89.
Nick accepted the challenge and went with the time-tested strategy of using heat to expand the metal hose nut screwed onto the faucet. This allowed his penetrating oil to seep into the threads. From there, he was able to use a hold-back wrench and a primary wrench to remove the hose. It worked and kept Rick from having to replace the entire hose faucet, not to mention it kept $291 in his pocket.
Rick left us a review afterward:
Nick removed a garden hose fitting that was fused to a faucet thereby eliminating the need to replace the entire faucet. The service was prompt and efficient. I highly recommend Mackin Plumbing.

Why $89 was worth it to us
Sure, we walked away with only $89 (not even enough to fill the gas tank), but Rick is a longtime customer who calls us anytime he has a plumbing problem, and that is worth much more to us.
